Educause recap: and the band played on…

  1. I talked to all vendors all the time — I only made it to one session!
  2. my emphasis was on telephony/networking stuff and on student information systems/ERP integration stuff–not too fun
  3. nice to see old friends
  4. exhausting as ever but this time with an extra soupcon of anxiety regarding the economy and the possibility that all our jobs will disappear into the ether, I mean, the cloud.

given your hectic schedule, I’m glad you made it to the party! Nice to see being a CTO hasn’t made you too cool for the dance floor. 😉

    re: your item #4

we’ve recently moved offices away from the majority chunk of users we support. we now have a dedicated physical help desk as opposed to the idea of one (read: my damn desk). walk-ins have, understandably, gone way down. surprisingly, so have email and phone requests. waaaaaaay down. i’m starting to fear i might have moved myself one step closer to the oblivion you describe for the sake of more fully inhabiting the gothic playground.

it’s psychologically interesting though – without us there, are they floundering? i think we’d have heard complaints if we were. did we coddle them and have they now learned how to google? are they just making do? we still have a staffer onsite for a few hours every day, but he claims not to be overwhelmed with requests. shall i take parental pride that our baby birds can fly on their own?

so maybe we’re all just fooling ourselves. are we keeping ourselves in jobs with black arts and voodoo? are these machines not that dumbfounding after all?

Essprit: I am never too cool for the dance floor! But having you out there already made joining easy.

KD: your tale is interesting. what is going on? did your proximity make you an enabler of tech incompetency? maybe they just liked to talk to you?
