I love the smell of napalm in the morning….

Louis Gerstner in “Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance” argues that you need a crisis to create true cultural change. I attended a NITLE seminar on cloud computing and two CIOs discussed their move to Google Apps–email specifically. In both cases, their current email systems were collapsing and everyone was unhappy. So, the move to Google went quickly and smoothly.  I wonder what our crisis will be? Economy, anyone?

Nope, ours is crappy email system. In fact, “current email systems were collapsing and everyone was unhappy” is a pretty good descriptor. Here’s hoping “move to Google went quickly and smoothly” is in our future as well.

I am on the verge of moving to gmail/google apps. The central e-mail service is spotty at best. I see it as very low risk for my staff and my department. If it’s successful, I look like a genius. If it isn’t, I look like a person that isn’t afraid to take chances and try new things. win and a win.

Rufusb: the only risk is to you in terms of your relationship with the central service providers. Can you dump someone and still remain friends? Depends….–how do you say “It’s not you, it’s me” in IT language?

Gmail will be an opt-in service for our users. We already own the domain. The “big brother” never need know (how about that for alliteration?). We have multiple users who have moved to gmail already and no one has squeaked. It seems like a safe bet. In fact, I think that telling the All Powerful Oz would only incur his wrath. In fact, like the movie version, our Oz is really a bunch of smoke and mirrors.
