Day 2, Year 2: Like yesterday, but with cake

My staff surprised me with a cake today! This was nice. I Reflected Grandly…. here’s what I said:

What I did well:

  • made some good hires
  • get us all wiki’ing ‘n stuff
  • reconvened all the various technology planning groups
  • clarified project priorities
  • got my budget passed which included a very large request to go completely wireless in all dorms
  • built some good relationships on campus and with some vendors
  • got us off to a good start with our strategic plan

What needs improvement:

  • I underestimated our difficulty executing complicated projects. I need to micromanage this or manage it more closely (depending on your attitude and expectations).
  • The community here wants me to Change Everything Now and, like a sticker I saw on a change machine, “Change Takes Time.” I need to spend more time communicating what we have done in order to demonstrate our progress as we “repair the aircraft in mid-air en route”

My staff surprised me by complaining to the president. I think I like what your staff got you better.

In conversations about change, I’m often reminded of the old George Carlin quote: “I put a dollar in the change machine. Nothing changed!” I think there’s a lesson in that somehow.

Kyle, I am, mentally, lighting a candle for you…btw–I ran into the CIO at the place you used to work (the place in the desert, with the GAMBLING), and she had a lot of really nice things to say about you. So take heart.

Essprit: I think I’m going to buy a change machine and put it next to my “EASY” button.
