Tomorrow is my first day

Meet with HR in the am, then new boss, then staff, etc. It should be typical first day administrative stuff. What to wear? Not a suit–this college seems pretty laid back. I think I’m going to ask someone to give me an Outlook tutorial. I haven’t used Windows in 4 years! Why did they hire me? I didn’t exactly skirt the open source issue in my interview, but I also didn’t come right out and share my true feelings. But as I said in the interview, the right thing for the school isn’t what I say, nor is it what they say, it’s what we say. So, I’ll try a little Windows and maybe I’ll get them to feed a little penguin…

Good Luck! I suspect you will be able to figure Outlook out pretty quickly, its not exactly hard to use. Then again you might catch cooties…

Peering though the Windows of my mind…

“…Hanging around, nothing to do but frown, rainy days and Mondays and Outlook always get me down…”

What about other windows email readers _other_ than outlook? Is thunderbird an option?

“Technically, Windows is an “operating system,” which means that it supplies your computer with the basic commands that it needs to suddenly, with no warning whatsoever, stop operating.” – Dave Barry

Fight the good – and flexible – fight. Will you pine for Pine? Have you seen Alpine (or are they the competition now?)?

good luck on the first day. hopefully you’ll spend the time that was supposed to be for learning outlook on how to access mail files through a much more friendly and less complex program.

at least, that’s what i did on my first day of graduate school. 🙂

When it’s time to feed the little Penguin just tell them:

“The box said “Requires Windows XP or better.” So I installed LINUX”

Then you can feed them after midnight and they’ll multiply! 😉

Unfortunately, I can’t use another email client. I mean, they don’t even support firefox as a browser. I’m not kidding. I could forward all my mail to google or something, but I think I should use the tools my staff is providing. The goal is to change the tools. Or to change the staff…

You can always take Rands’ incrementalist approach. Obviously you’re not going to get an entire organization to switch their OS and email client overnight.

Best of luck and I look forward to eating popcorn and watching this action-adventure unfold.

Is that why you left [where you used to work — edited by Admin to protect anonymity] – you couldn’t change the tools or the staff? If you need any Windows pointers, you probably haven’t burned your bridges yet. By the way – you should see the new Windows core services install – command-line only environment. If you close your eyes you can pretend it’s unix.

Hrmph, I started using Pine again after recent troubles with “winslows” email clients.
